Muncie’s outdoor scene is flat, green, and easy to get into. The Cardinal Greenway, a 62-mile rail trail that runs right through town, works for a walk, run, or bike ride of whatever length you have time for, while the nature trail at Minnetrista Museum & Gardens is a quick escape along the White River. For a bigger day out, Prairie Creek Reservoir southeast of the city adds lakeside trails, fishing, and boating, and Mounds State Park in Anderson is only about 30 minutes away.

Closer to home, Silvertree’s sand volleyball and basketball courts make it easy to get outside with friends without ever leaving the community.

Muncie’s nightlife runs on a lot more than bars, which is good news since plenty of Ball State students aren’t 21 yet. Be Here Now in The Village hosts live music, comedy, and trivia several nights a week, and downtown’s First Thursday art walk fills the streets with buskers, gallery openings, and pop-up activities once a month. For a planned night out or a date, Muncie Civic Theatre stages plays and musicals year-round, and Boulder Falls Mini Golf and BatZone adds fun and competition to your evening.

Game day is a big deal at Ball State. The Ball State Cardinals compete in the Mid-American Conference, with football Saturdays at Scheumann Stadium and basketball and volleyball taking over Worthen Arena once the weather cools off. Both the men’s and women’s volleyball programs are among the most competitive in the country, so a match at Worthen is well worth adding to your list.

Students who want to get in the game themselves can join intramural leagues and club sports through Ball State’s Recreation Services, and Silvertree’s on-site basketball court is always ready for a pickup game.

Muncie keeps a steady calendar of community events alongside campus life. The Farmers Market at Minnetrista brings fresh produce and local vendors on Saturday mornings in the warmer months, Minnetrista’s Fourth of July celebration wraps up with fireworks over the lawn, and the Delaware County Fair brings concerts, grandstand events, and plenty of fair food each summer. During the school year, downtown’s Cornerstone Center for the Arts hosts concerts and performances, and Ball State’s Homecoming week keeps the fall semester buzzing with school spirit.
